An accident waiting to happen?

Circumstances which can lead to an injury at work are often an accident waiting to happen, which could mean weeks or months off work. The injuries from your accident may need hospital treatment and rehabilitation.

An accident can be life-changing

The result of your injuries could affect your ability to return to work or do the same type of job in the future. Some can leave you permanently disabled requiring life-long treatment, care and equipment, and modifications to your home.

Employer Duty of Care

Cypriot law follows the principles of English law. Under Article 51 of the Civil Wrongs Act Chapter 148, employers “must take the necessary measures in order to maintain the working environment in a safe condition”, which applies whether you work in an office, factory or construction site.

Your employer has a duty of care not to expose their employees to unnecessary risks, and must provide:

  • Safe equipment
  • Secure working systems
  • Regular risk assessments
  • Routine safety inspections and equipment maintenance
  • Necessary training, guidelines and instructions

An employer can be considered to have breached their duty of care owed to you as an employee if they failed to do everything that was “practicable” and reasonable in the circumstances to minimise the risk of harm.

Frequency of accidents at work increased by 17.4 per cent in Cyprus – World Day for Safety and Health at Work, April 2017.
